Best Hoodies For Men 2024 - Forbes Vetted

Oct 17, 2024

The best men’s hoodies are more than something to throw on for the gym—newer designs, including our top overall pick from Lululemon, are laidback and stylish, whether you’re traveling, working remotely or grabbing coffee. Some, like the J.Crew Cashmere Hoodie, can even be worn to the office or more formal occasions thanks to the sumptuous cashmere fabric and fitted silhouette. Much like a good pair of jeans or a white t-shirt, a hoodie is a casual basic that’s worth investing in since you’ll likely wear it—a lot.

The best hoodies for men are sleek, stylish and comfortable enough for everyday wear.

In addition to polling Forbes Vetted staffers for their favorites, we consulted with deputy editor (and in-house style expert) Kari Molvar and several stylists to compile our list of 12 winners—and 14 additional picks. We also spent more than ten hours evaluating each product's fabric, style, size range, price and overall comfort before finalizing this guide. From a soft, broken-in Todd Snyder pullover to a rugged Flint And Tinder zip-up, here are the best hoodies for men that we highly recommend.

Lululemon

Sizes: XS to XXL | Colors: 2 total, including Heathered Ultra Light Grey and Black | Materials: 59% cotton, 38% polyester and 3% elastane

Lululemon’s bestselling hoodie gets top marks across the board for its breathable cotton French terry that feels soft against your skin, stretchable design that moves with your body and classic fit. Subtle details also make this hoodie stand out, such as panels in the sleeves that prevent this sweatshirt from feeling too tight.

What the reviews say: Many call out the stylishness and comfort of this hoodie, with reviewers saying that it has a “breathable yet comfortable fabric that’s nice for lounging or working out” and “a great weight and fit.” A few noted that “after one wash this sweatshirt shows pilling” and some find that it runs small.

Mack Weldon

Sizes: S to XL | Colors: 9 total, including Night Owl and Charcoal Heather| Materials: 89% cotton, 8% polyester, 3% spandex

Mack Weldon’s zip-front hoodie is made from micro-brushed French terry and cotton jersey, which makes it extra soft and comfortable to wear zipped or unzipped, if you want it to function more like a jacket. It has a secret interior stash pocket for tucking belongings, and if you prefer, it’s also available in a pullover style.

What the reviews say: Reviewers consistently praise this hoodie for its softness, quality and fit, saying, “beautiful, heavy, fits perfectly. Quality is top notch,“ and “nice stretchy material. It hugs the body, but not tight.” Others, however, find the weight of the fabric to be too heavy and say the shoulders can have a pointy appearance.

Todd Snyder

Sizes: XS to XXL | Colors: 8 total, including Antique Grey Mix and Original Navy | Materials: 100% cotton

For a hoodie that’s great for the beach and hanging outside on cooler days, Todd Snyder’s sweatshirt has vintage vibes with a worn-in look from the first wear. This style is part of a collaboration with Champion, and it cut from a knit that resists shrinking and retains its shape over time. The kangaroo pocket and hood ties add classic detailing for an overall look that never goes out of style.

What the reviews say: One reviewer calls this a “wardrobe essential,” and another says it’s “way softer than I anticipated and [has] an impeccable fit.” This is even a style that several reviewers buy in multiple colors, noting that it “looks great with jeans” and is “soft and warm.” However, some say the sizing isn’t consistent across different colors.

American Giant

Sizes: S to XXL | Colors: 4 total, including Oxford Blue and Black | Materials: 100% combed ringspun cotton

American Giant’s Classic Pullover features the brand’s proprietary heavyweight fleece, with 100 percent combed ringspun cotton that removes the heavy fabric’s roughness. The hoodie also contains a double-lined hood for extra warmth and protection.

What the reviews say: Users say this style stands out for comfort and fit. One reviewers says, “The fabric is thick, soft, and will be great to wear in the fall and winter,” and another comments that it has a “great fit and feel. It isn't baggy and has a good shape to it.” However, one person says “the color fades disappointingly fast.”

Huckberry

Sizes: XS to XXXL | Colors: 5 total, including Forest and Medium Heather Grey | Materials: 54% polyester, 41% cotton, 5% rayon

Two of the hallmarks of Huckberry brand Flint and Tinder are made-in-the-USA quality and comfort. Its 10-Year hoodie features weighty 12 oz fleece, a double-lined hood, heavy duty zippers and an inside media pocket. Even better, the brand offers a 10-year guarantee on this sweatshirt, so if anything tears or comes apart, they’ll replace it.

What the reviews say: Durability is a standout feature of this hoodie, with reviewers saying it’s “much thicker than most other sweatshirts” and it’s “nice and warm, good material, fits well.” But according to one reviewer, the “fabric was so stiff” and another comments that “the hood is enormous.”

Alo Yoga

Sizes: S to XXL | Colors: 5 total, including Bone and Black | Materials: Tri-blend fleece

After the past few years, we’re pretty sure there’s no such thing as an office dress code anymore. But if you need to look work appropriate and comfortable on the weekends, Alo’s Triumph hoodie is sleek and streamlined, with a soft tri-blend fleece inside.

What the reviews say: Many like the fit and weight of this hoodie, saying it “fits like a glove in a good way,” the “material is soft and the fit is perfect for throwing on after a workout,” and it “keeps me warm despite the material being thin.” For some, though, the quality could be better—they comment that “it frays” and the fabric feels different after washing.

J. Crew

Sizes: XS to XXL | Colors: 2 total, including Hthr Grey and Navy | Materials: 100% cashmere

J.Crew’s best-selling hoodie is crafted from 100% cashmere, making it the softest piece in your wardrobe. The hoodie has a fitted casual silhouette and ribbed cuffs that you can easily style rolled up or down, making this good for the office or dressier situations.

What the reviews say: The elevated look of this hoodie makes it a style standout to reviewers, and many love its feel and fit. Users call it “extremely soft and slim fitting” and say “the hood is very proportionate and not oversized.” However, some say the colors aren’t true to what is represented online.

Ten Thousand

Sizes: XS to XXL | Colors: Black | Materials: Nylon, polyester, lycra, spandex

When you need a hoodie for warm-ups at the gym or workouts outside, Ten Thousand’s is made for training. It’s cut from a stretchy material that moves with you; the fabric features a durable water repellant (DWR) coating, so it will repel rain; and it has a silver ion odor treatment so it won’t get stinky over time. Other thoughtful details include zippered hand, arm and chest pockets to stash belongings and a cinchable scuba hood.

What the reviews say: The thoughtful design of this hoodie receives high marks from reviewers, who make comments such as “seam placement is great” and “fits great, not restrictive at all. It is light, but keeps me warm on chilly spring mornings” and “ultra durable but yet soft.” But certain reviewers had issues with small details: One person said he didn’t like how the pockets laid and another commented, “not sure I like the elastic band on the bottom.”

Amazon

Sizes: XS to 3X | Colors: 15 total, including Black and Washed Antique Blue | Materials: 82% cotton, 18% polyester

Champion has long been known for its athletic wear, especially hoodies. After the brand’s revival (and a few celebrity sightings) in the last few years, Champion is trending again, and their high-quality cotton pullovers remain bestsellers for their versatility and comfortable fit, whether you wear them for actual workouts or beyond.

What the reviews say: “I like that it's casual and quiet, easy to wear with anything, and the heavyweight cotton feels like a big warm hug on a cold morning,” says Forbes Gear Editor Cameron Vigliotta. “It's also brushed on the inside for additional softness.” Other reviewers like that the generous fit allows room for layering, and say it’s “super cozy and thick” and the “length of sleeves fit very well.” However, taller guys may find the fit of this sweatshirt challenging in the regular length, with one saying, “if you like a longer fit (beyond waistline) this fits short.” But luckily, it’s available in tall lengths, so just take note when purchasing.

Nike

Sizes: XS to 3XL | Colors: 20+ total, including Black and Light Bone| Materials: 80% cotton, 20% polyester

Shoppers have loved Nike’s hooded sweatshirts for decades. They’re comfortable and cool, and have a versatile fit. This top-rated Sportswear Club pullover has a fleece lining that keeps you warm all season and comes in endless colors.

What the reviews say: Many love the value of this style for the money, and some say that it’s a “nice thick hoodie, washes well and holds its shape” and the “hood shape is spot on.” But some say the sizing is off in certain areas (“the sleeves are more snug, even at the forearm”) and they had to size up.

Bonobos

Sizes: XS to XXL | Colors: 5 total, including Black and Navy| Materials: 75% polyester, 25% spandex

Bonobos’s hoodie is the ultimate hardworker, made with a sporty double-knit fabric and two-way front zipper. It’s great for layering over a collared shirt or wearing more casually on the golf course. The grosgrain locker loop adds a stylish touch.

What the reviews say: Many love the fabric and versatility of this hoodie, commenting that it’s a “comfortable hoodie with nice stretchy and soft material” and it’s “lightweight. Great for flights/office, etc. Looks sharp.” However, several reviewers say they struggle with the zippers.

L.L.Bean

Sizes: S to 3XL | Colors: 3 total, including Carbon Navy and Shadow Green | Materials: 59% cotton, 38% polyester, 3% spandex

Chances are you have a thin hoodie that’s been in your closet for years. If that's the case, it’s time for an upgrade. L.L.Bean’s lightweight sweatshirt is slightly fitted around the waist and has a looser design around the chest and sleeves. It also has everything you should look for in a pullover: It’s breathable, stretchy and soft against the skin.

What the reviews say: Reviewers say this sweatshirt is a “very soft and comfortable, lightweight sweatshirt. Great to wear as a layer or by itself” and “not too baggy and not slim.” However, a few people were not happy with the neck circumference, saying “the neck was too tight and uncomfortable.”

The Forbes Vetted team has no shortage of opinions on hoodies, and many own multiple types and styles. If you haven’t found exactly what you’re looking for above, here are additional favorites that we also recommend and wear regularly.

Vuori

This soft hoodie is made from (mostly) recycled fabric that has built-in four-way stretch and moisture-wicking abilities. So you can wear it to and from the gym on chilly days—and even work out in it—but it's also sleek enough for everyday wear.

Peter Millar

Hoodies are now allowed on most golf courses, but you can't show up in a bulky, oversized sweatshirt. This smooth polyester and spandex hoodie can easily be layered over a polo or under a jacket (or even a blazer), and it has four-way stretch, moisture-wicking features and a micro-waffle back for softness and breathability.

Stio

This iconic ski brand's hoodie is made of heavyweight organic French terry cotton that's rugged enough for all of your outdoor adventures. There is a looped interior lining for extra comfort; stretch ribbing on the sides, cuffs and hem for durability; and the double-lined hood provides warmth. If you need somewhere to stash your phone or earbuds during a hike or bike ride, you can tuck them into the small drop-in pocket located above the kangaroo pocket.

Jenni Kayne

This dressed-up hoodie is made from a luxurious blend of wool and cashmere, making it perfect for layering under coats and blazers for an elevated look—or throw it on with jeans for a more casual vibe. It's only available in two colors—Fog and Oatmeal—but both neutral shades have go-with-anything appeal.

Vilebrequin

Known for their luxury St. Tropez-inspired swimwear, Vilebrequin teamed up with Highsnobiety, a fashion and media brand, to create a hoodie fit for the French Riviera. This oversized, 100% cotton hoodie features a small Vilebrequin x Highsnobiety logo on the chest, as well as a larger one across the back. The logo may seem a little loud, but it's all part of the French beachwear look.

Billy Reid

What sets this hoodie apart is the thoughtful, stylish details. Made of midweight cotton-blend ribbed knit that's easy to layer under coats and jackets, it has antique brass drawcord tips, leather toggles and ribbon stripe branding at the back of the neck. The relaxed (but not oversized) fit is flattering and the black and denim blue shades have a contrasting color in the inside of the hood.

Faherty

Faherty designed this hoodie for ultimate comfort and versatility. It's made of cotton that's been combed for extra softness, and the fit is relaxed but streamlined. The hoodie is available in standard and tall sizing, and you can choose between eight colors and two prints (Blue Horizon Surf Stripe and Palm Rainbow Ombre).

Madewell

Made of thick, warm midweight French terry, this is a hoodie you will want to wear on chilly days. It has dropped shoulders, a slight taper at the waist and no strings on the hood for an elevated look. It runs a little big, so you may want to size down.

Johnnie-O

Part half zip, part hoodie, this luxury layering piece is made of a sumptuous wool-cashmere blend that's both comfortable and breathable. The half zip not only dresses up the classic hoodie shape, but it also makes it easy to get on and off quickly. Wear it over an Oxford shirt for a business casual look, or throw on a blazer if you are headed to a more formal event.

Carhartt

Nothing is worse than a hoodie that’s too tight that you can’t actually pull the hood up. This loose-fitting pullover is designed to be roomy with a generously-sized three-piece hood and plenty of space to rest your hands in the pockets. We also like the inclusive sizing—XS to 4XL—and the seven color choices.

Prices on hoodies run the gamut from cashmere versions that cost hundreds of dollars to solid basics that cost less than your lunch order. These hoodies stand out for their high quality and affordable price.

Gap

If you like your hoodies to have a lived-in, softly broken-in look, then check out Gap’s selection of vintage-like cotton pullovers. Each one has an adjustable drawstring that secures the hood in place and a front “kanga” pocket to keep hands warm. The Vintage Soft Hoodie is available in 16 colors, including shades like Dark Maroon and Supersonic Blue, and the cotton-recycled polyester blend material ensures the hoodie holds up in the wash.

H&M

This cotton-polyester sweatshirt from H&M has everything you need in a hoodie: A relaxed fit, soft fabric and a large front pocket—plus it's available in a wide range of sizes (XS to 3XL) and seven colors. Pair it with joggers or jeans for a casual look or chinos if you want to look more polished.

Dick's Sporting Goods

Wear it on a run. Play pickleball in it. Throw it on when you get out of the shower. This endlessly versatile hoodie has a loose fit for ultimate comfort and the midweight cotton-blend fleece is brushed for extra warmth and softness. While some shades are still $60, three hues, including classic Halo Gray, are now on sale for $27.

Amazon

This hoodie doesn't have any special features, but it's a comfortable, soft, well-made sweatshirt that will suit your needs. The durable and sustainable midweight cotton-poly fleece is pill-resistant and the hoodie is available in 31 colors, including expensive-looking shades like charcoal heather.

The Forbes Vetted team has researched, written and published dozens of clothing stories, including roundups of the best sweaters for men and best undershirts for men.

To find the best hoodies for men, we considered several factors, such as fabric, style, size range, comfort, versatility and price.

A great sweatshirt is a staple in every guy’s closet, and the hoodie’s popularity spans generations. It might not be as worn-in as a white tee or as formal as a button-down, but a hoodie can anchor a lot of menswear looks, and it’s even great for layering. Here’s what to keep in mind to find high-quality options that will last:

While a hoodie can be used for work or play, it helps to know when you’re likely to wear it. If it’s for hiking, for example, then durability is key, says Hallie Abrams, fashion expert with The Wardrobe Consultant. For instance, Ten Thousand’s Tactical Hoodie is ideal for workouts out for its breathability, stretch and zip pockets. If you’re looking for a hoodie for work in a business-casual setting, then style, weight and the structure and fabric snapback of the fabric are important. Bonobos’ The Elements Golf Full-Zip Hoodie is ideal for work from home and in-office days. No matter the activity, though, every hoodie has to be comfortable, at a minimum.

Hoodies come in a variety of materials, from cotton to cotton blends to poly blends with stretch. “Nothing beats French terry,” says fashion expert Cindy Conroy. “The brushed fabric makes for an exceptionally soft hoodie that delivers on comfort, wash after wash.” French terry is a cotton knit with loops on the inside and a smooth surface; it’s breathable and versatile. Cotton hoodies such as Todd Snyder’s Midweight Popover Hoodie, Champion’s Reverse Weave Pullover and American Giant’s Classic Pullover are three popular picks.

If you’re planning on being more active in your hoodie—working out and or you have an active commute—then you’ll want at least a hint of polyester for its stretch and moisture-wicking potential. “Man-made fabrics like polyester add durability and a moisture-wicking element to the garment,” says Abrams. For more active pursuits, you may like Ten Thousand’s Tactical Hoodie and Lululemon’s City Sweat Pullover Hoodie.

In general, you have two choices when shopping for a hoodie: a full-zip style or a pullover style, with full-zips having two pockets and a pullover style typically having a kangaroo pocket. It really comes down to personal preference, but generally speaking, a zipped hoodie is more casual and laidback while a pullover hoodie is slightly more formal and fashion-forward. “A pullover hoodie [without] prominent logos or pockets is polished,” finds Abrams, adding that hoodies without drawstrings also have an elevated look. Occasionally, you will find hoodies with a quarter zip feature, but that is less common.

One thing that makes hoodies so versatile is that they can be layered over or under other fashion pieces. For instance, you may want to layer a technical hoodie like Vuori’s Coronado Hoodie over a crisp tee, or you may want to wear a stylish blazer over a cashmere hoodie—like J.Crew’s Cashmere Hoodie—in colder months. How you’ll layer your piece will determine just how fitted, or baggy, you’ll want it to be.

All the brands we highlighted in this guide make excellent hoodies, but we especially like the offerings from lululemon, Todd Snyder, Mack Weldon, American Giant and J.Crew. They have a nice variety of styles and colors, and the materials used are soft and durable.

There are a few key factors to consider when choosing a quality hoodie. The fabric is perhaps the most important, as it should be soft, comfortable and durable. Look for hoodies made from cotton or cotton blends; often, polyester is added for extra durability and moisture-wicking properties. Thick hems, cuffs and drawstrings are also indications of a quality hoodie. If the garment has a hood, make sure the material is the same weight as the body and isn’t see-through.

The best fabric for a hoodie largely depends on how you plan to use it. If you’re looking for a hoodie that can be used for outdoor activities, working out or traveling, a cotton blend with a hint of polyester is your best bet. For example, the Ten Thousand’s Tactical Hoodie is made from a durable blend of nylon, polyester and spandex. It also has a water-repellant (DWR) coating and a unique ceramic print on the upper portion to resist abrasions. However, if you plan to wear your hoodie to work or a more formal event, opt for cotton, wool or cashmere.
