Sebewaing police host 'Cops and Bobbers' event June 10

Nov 12, 2023

Village of Sebewaing Police Chief Steve Repkie is hosting a free "Cops and Bobbers" event for area children, encouraging them to stay away from dangerous things.

The Village of Sebewaing Police Department is putting its own twist on a popular children's game with this weekend's first Cops and Bobbers event.

Earlier this year, Police Chief Steve Repkie had an idea to get kids from the area to come out and enjoy a day of fishing. The idea has blossomed into a community event, with many residents, businesses and others donating to make it happen.

"I'd rather see a fishing pole than something else that could be in a kid's hand," Repkie said.

This Saturday at the Sebewaing Marina, the police department along with many others will be helping kids learn how to fish safely. A number of organizations, including a representative from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, will be in attendance handing out literature about fishing and the outdoors. The free event gets underway at 9 a.m.

The Sebewaing Police Department is hosting its first annual Cops and Bobbers event this Saturday.

Repkie wanted to thank the community for helping out with the event and for all of the donations that are helping to make his idea a reality. Residents have donated tackle boxes, fishing poles, T-shirts, hats, sunscreen and more.

"The community just jumped on it," Repkie said. "I never dreamed it would've gotten this big. A thank-you goes out to the Sebewaing community and donors that have helped out."

Repkie wants Cops and Bobbers to become an annual event and hopes to inspire kids.

A free lunch cookout will take place after the event. There will also be an opportunity to see boats loading and coming off the dock.
